College Students Teach Study Skills Course, Inspire Rhode Island Youth to Aim for Academic Success
The College Crusade of Rhode Island launches its second annual Ways to A’s study-skills program, taught by former members of the organization who have succeeded in college
Providence, R.I., July 9, 2008 – The College Crusade of Rhode Island today announced the start of Ways to A’s, a summer study-skills program provided for students from Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket. Over 500 area students who are members of The College Crusade are expected to attend the program, which will be held in four-day sessions over the next six weeks at the Community College of Rhode Island, Liston Campus, in Providence. The Ways to A’s curriculum, developed exclusively for The College Crusade, is designed to introduce incoming sixth-grade and ninth-grade students to the academic, social, and personal challenges of middle school and high school. The eleven instructors selected to teach Ways to A’s are all former members of The College Crusade who are currently in college or who are recent college graduates. “Ways to A’s is a customized course that prepares Crusaders to take the next step in their educational experience,” says William Formicola, vice president of operations for The College Crusade. “The program equips students with solid study skills and shows them how to maintain high academic expectations for themselves throughout middle school and high school. Our Ways to A’s instructors are particularly effective at modeling how good study habits, perseverance, and a positive attitude can lead to achievement,” he adds. “They have special insight to offer Crusaders because they completed the College Crusade program, graduated from Rhode Island high schools, and pursued successful college careers.” Ways to A’s coursework includes exercises in active listening, note taking, reading, and writing. The program also addresses memory improvement, test taking, learning styles, and time and classroom management. During the course, students acquire a host of new skills they can apply daily in school. Former members of The College Crusade who are teaching the Ways to A’s course this summer are:
