The College Crusade of Rhode Island sponsors campus visits and a Getting to College Conference this month

Providence, R.I., April 9, 2008 – College visits and an all-day Getting to College Conference top the list of programs offered for students in The College Crusade of Rhode Island this month. The organization will take hundreds of local middle school and high school students on visits to colleges in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Participants will tour campus, talk to college students, and learn firsthand about the opportunities and challenges of college life. At the Getting to College Conference, students will attend a workshop led by admission officers from Bryant University and Salve Regina University.

The mission of The College Crusade is to increase educational and career success for youth in Rhode Island’s low-income communities. Over 4,000 middle school and high school students belong to the organization. Most attend public schools in Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket. Membership in The College Crusade provides each student with sustained adult mentorship and years of free college-readiness programs and services from grade 6 through high school graduation.

During the upcoming school vacation week, April 14-18, 2008, high school Crusaders will visit Wheaton College, Brown University, Providence College, Regis College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lesley College, Trinity College, and Merrimack College. A trip to Wesleyan University is scheduled for later in the month.

During the same week, middle school Crusaders will visit Harvard University, Northeastern University, Stonehill College, Wheaton College, Emerson College, Bryant University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Emmanuel College, and Johnson & Wales University.

“College visits are among our key required activities for middle school and high school Crusaders every year,” says Mary Sylvia Harrison, president and CEO of The College Crusade. “They are often transformative experiences for our students. Being on campus helps them define their educational path and envision the goals they can accomplish. We walk them through each visit and encourage them to identify schools that meet their academic and career aspirations.”

A Getting to College Conference on Friday, April 18, rounds out the week’s activities. Held at the Providence Academy of International Studies, 182 Thurbers Avenue, Providence, this all-day conference for eleventh-grade Crusaders provides a jumpstart on the college application process. In four hands-on workshops, students will learn the components of the college admission process, including the crucial task of writing an effective personal statement. Priscilla Alicea, associate director of admission at Bryant College, and Ralph Tavares, assistant director of admission at Salve Regina University, will lead the essay-writing workshop.
