Rhode Island Students Welcome a New Season of Learning

Winter 2008 programs offered by The College Crusade of Rhode Island emphasize college readiness and career exploration


Providence, R.I., January 24, 2008 – The College Crusade of Rhode Island today announced the start of its 2008 winter schedule, which includes dozens of free programs and activities designed to increase educational and career success for students in Rhode Island’s low-income communities. This winter, College Crusade programs are offered weekdays after school, on weekends, and during school vacations. Programs range from academic enrichment and SAT study workshops to career expos and adventure education.

More than 4,000 middle school and high school students in Rhode Island are members of The College Crusade. Most attend public schools in Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket. Membership in The College Crusade provides each student with sustained adult mentorship and college-readiness programs and services from grade 6 through high school graduation.

The College Crusade’s winter 2008 programs for members include the following:

•    Cru Club – January to June
A set of college-readiness and career-exploration programs provided to students after school and on Saturdays. Features adult mentoring, peer mentoring, homework help, study skills workshops, book clubs, writing workshops, career decision making, service learning projects, college advising, and career speakers. Held in the schools on weekdays and at Johnson & Wales University Harborside Campus on Saturdays.

•    Adventures in Literacy – January to May
A computer-assisted learning program for fifth-grade Crusaders called ReadAbout, from Scholastic, Inc. Includes quiet reading, writing in response to text, and teacher-guided sessions. Held at two Providence elementary schools during the week and on Saturdays at The College Crusade office.

•    Saturday Academy – February 2 to April 12
A 30-hour academic enrichment program taught by The Princeton Review that helps middle school and high school students build reading, math, and English skills. Held Saturday mornings at Blackstone Academy in Pawtucket.

•    SAT Preparation – February 2 to April 26
A 12-week course in SAT preparation and practice tests taught by The Princeton Review. Held on Saturdays at School One in Providence.

•    Vacation Club – February 18-22
Five full days of activities for middle school and high school Crusaders during February school vacation. Highlights include middle-schoolers participating in Exchange City, an interactive learning and role-playing environment for young people that is hosted by Johnson & Wales University, and a three-day Career Expo for high-schoolers.

•    Elementary Vacation Camp / Rites of Passage – February 18-21
A four-day program that helps students prepare for a successful “passage” from fifth and sixth grade to middle school. Focuses on expectations, leadership skills, decision making, healthy choices, role models, self-esteem, confidence building, and more. Held at Veterans Memorial School in Central Falls.

•    CAAP (Crusade Adventure and Academic Program) – March 1 to May 3
A 10-week program in adventure education for middle school students that improves self-esteem and develops skills in problem solving, team building, and healthy risk taking. Includes a literacy component.
