258 Rhode Island Sixth-Graders Join The College Crusade
Middle school students from Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket are newest members of college-readiness program
Providence, R.I., November 14, 2007 – This fall, 258 sixth-graders from Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket started school as new members of The College Crusade of Rhode Island. For the next seven years, all the way to high school graduation, The College Crusade will provide these students with Advisory services and an array of specialized programs designed to help them prepare for college. All students admitted to The College Crusade are from low-income families and attend public schools or public charter schools. Students apply for membership in the organization when they are in fifth grade. They submit an application form, including an essay explaining why they wish to join. Parents and guardians attend an orientation workshop to demonstrate commitment to their child’s education. Over the summer, students also participate in a study-skills workshop called Ways to A’s. “We congratulate these young people for earning admission to our program,” said Mary Sylvia Harrison, president and CEO of The College Crusade. “As new members of our organization, they join thousands of other students from Rhode Island’s disadvantaged urban communities who are committed to achieving academic success. We look forward to working with these new Crusaders throughout their middle school and high school years and to supporting them in their college and career aspirations.” The mission of The College Crusade of Rhode Island is to increase college readiness and career success for youth in Rhode Island’s low-income communities. From grade 6 through grade 12, Crusaders benefit from the steady, nurturing presence of caring adults and participate in activities that focus on academic enrichment, social and personal development, career awareness and exploration, and readiness for college. All Crusaders pledge to work hard in school and to be good citizens in their communities. Students who complete the program and graduate from high school can qualify for college scholarships if they are financially eligible.
