Using Electronic Portfolio Design in Today’s Classroom
The College Crusade of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Office of Higher Education sponsor a free college workshop for education professionals
Providence, R.I., May 7, 2009 – The College Crusade of Rhode Island today announced that it is partnering with the Rhode Island Office of Higher Education to sponsor an ongoing series of free five-day workshops in electronic portfolio design for Rhode Island educators. The workshop series, titled “Using Electronic Portfolio Design in Today’s Classroom,” is taught by two faculty members in Educational Studies at Rhode Island College, Dr. Paul Tiskus and Dr. Susan Patterson. “We are offering educators this course to help them respond to the state-mandated portfolio requirement for all Rhode Island high school graduates,” said William J. Formicola, vice president of operations for The College Crusade. “Education professionals who take the course learn how to help students create effective and expressive portfolios that are aligned with their individual learning plans. Participants develop a hands-on, sophisticated understanding of how to use electronic portfolios to support student success.” In the workshop, educators learn how to design and construct their own electronic portfolio, develop a personal webpage, edit digital images and videos, and evaluate web-based instructional resources. Since the workshops began in February 2009, a total of 42 educators have received training in electronic portfolio design. To be eligible to take the course, participants must be a public school district employee in Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, or Woonsocket. Tuition and fees for the course are paid for by funds from the federal GEAR UP program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs). The workshop will be offered throughout the spring and summer of 2009 through the Rhode Island College Office of Continuing Education. The College Crusade and the Rhode Island Office of Higher Education offer free professional development training for Rhode Island educators every year. Participants can earn graduate credit or professional development credit from the Rhode Island Department of Education.
