Donate stocks or other highly appreciated assets for a win-win proposition

If you have highly appreciated securities that you have held for at least one year, donating stock may be the most tax-savvy way to give. Your tax benefit is determined by the fair-market value of your stock at the time of the gift – not your basis (the amount you originally paid for the stock). This means you avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation and get a charitable deduction! The College Crusade will sell the stock immediately and apply it to current needs unless you direct us otherwise. We do not play the market with your gift and we do not pay capital gains when we sell, since we are a nonprofit organization.

For example: let’s say you purchased 100 shares of ABC stock in 2000 for $10 a share and today it’s worth $50 a share. If you were to give some of those shares to The College Crusade today, your tax deduction will be based on the current $50 value of the stock. Since you also would avoid the capital gains tax in this transaction, the benefit is even greater!

Contact our Development office at 854-5506 x 124 for quick and easy stock transfer information.

Name The College Crusade in your estate plans

We will formally acknowledge those individuals who make a future gift to The College Crusade of Rhode Island. Gifts may come from bequests, insurance policies, retirement policies, trusts or other vehicles naming The College Crusade as sole or partial beneficiary. If you are considering a planned gift of this type, make sure to discuss it with your financial advisor, and please contact our development director, Bob Oberg, before you finalize your gift.

Using your retirement fund instead of your life insurance policy for your charitable contributions as part of your estate plans can provide a better tax result for your heirs. Assets from your retirement funds are taxable to your heirs, whereas insurance pay-outs are not. As always, consult your advisor.

Give through the United Way

unitedwaysmall.gif While we prefer a direct contribution, we can receive United Way gifts if you designate the "The College Crusade of Rhode Island" during your workplace campaign pledge. Make sure to write in the full name of our organization. Or, if you have established a Philanthropy Fund at the United Way, you can arrange for a distribution to us.

Give through your group or organization

If you belong to a club, social or religious group, union or other organization, or if you lead a youth group, suggest that your group consider The College Crusade as the beneficiary of a fundraising event.
